What can a lactation consultant help with?
✔ Prenatal education and expectations for feeding a new baby.
I’ll help you understand newborn rhythms, normal feeding patterns, how to recognize feeding cues, and common challenges.
✔ Solving problems with latch, nipple pain, and positioning.
We’ll work together to fix a painful latch, decrease and eliminate nipple pain, and heal sore spots.
✔ Making a plan to improve your baby’s weight gain.
If your baby isn’t gaining weight as expected, we’ll monitor weight gain and check their weight before and after feeding to measure how much they take in during a feed. I can help determine the cause of slow weight gain and help with latch, milk supply, and a feeding plan to get baby on track. If you need to supplement, I can help with that, too.
✔ Complex feeding situations and special needs.
I offer support for twins, premature infants, exclusive pumping, triple feeding, anatomical differences, and other special feeding challenges. I also work with families tandem nursing an older baby or toddler, non-gestational parents who are inducing lactation, and other unique family situations.
✔ Referrals and follow-up care for related needs, like tongue tie revision.
If we determine that your baby has a tongue or lip tie that my benefit from being released, I can help you choose a provider and follow up with you for ongoing care after the release. I can also refer you and your baby for bodywork, such as craniosacral therapy, that may help support the release of tight muscles and fascia that can make breastfeeding challenging.
✔ Compassionate, judgment-free support.
Whether you're breastfeeding, pumping, combination feeding, or still deciding what works best, you'll be met with respect and encouragement. Parental mental health is important to me, and I want to support you in whatever way you need.
